Prevention is Key!

Connecting with a Veterinarian in Huntington Beach is just the first step. As part of our mission statement, our entire team is devoted to ensuring we provide all the information you need to make the right decisions to keep your pet companions as healthy as possible.

On every visit, we will do a full examination and thoroughly evaluate each pet’s history to ensure the best recommendations are made. A wellness examination will include evaluating which vaccines are necessary, reviewing the best options for parasite prevention, weight management, and dental care.

We encourage examinations every 6 months because many disease conditions can progress very quickly. We will tailor which blood and urine tests are best for your pet’s age, and clearly explain when additional tests like blood pressure measurement, x-rays, or fecal testing are necessary.

Parasite Prevention

Fleas, ticks, and heartworm are present in Southern California, and it’s vital to protect your pet. While fleas, ticks, and heartworm can be a serious threat to your pet’s health, Huntington Beach Pet Hospital can help you avert issues and diseases caused by these parasites.

Every examination includes a specific recommendation for which product is best suited for your pet’s environmental exposure. Our hospital carries Trifexis, Nexgard, and Revolution.

We only carry gold standard for cats which is Revolution Plus and for dogs we give options of preventative tick medication vs. no tick medication, and those are either Simparica or Trifexis. We can always provide links to other preventatives through our online store.

Common Parasites Explained

Fleas

Fleas are small, jumping insects that live off of the blood of animals. They can carry dangerous diseases and will often cause allergic dermatitis (“severe itching”) in pets.

Ticks

Ticks are external parasites that live off of the bodily fluids of animals. They can carry diseases from one animal to another and are the main cause of the spread of diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Heartworm

Heartworm is a parasite that can live in the heart of dogs and cats. Mosquitoes carry the worm from one infected animal to another. Several hundred worms can live in the heart of a dog and infection from the parasite causes significant damage and can be fatal.

When it Comes to Your Pet’s Health, Prevention is Key

Your pet’s best defense against disease is consistent, proactive care. From wellness exams to parasite prevention, our team is here to keep your companion healthy and happy year-round.

Did You Know?
In California, fleas are a year-round problem — cold weather doesn't reliably kill them, and flea pupae can stay dormant until conditions improve. That's why continuous flea prevention is essential, even in winter.

Myth Buster
Many pet owners think indoor pets are safe from heartworm disease, but mosquitoes easily make their way inside. One bite is all it takes to transmit heartworm — so year-round prevention is a must, no matter your pet’s lifestyle.

FAQ’s

At Huntington Beach Pet Hospital, we tailor our vaccination recommendations to your pet’s individual lifestyle, age, and health needs.

Our core vaccinations include Rabies, Distemper/Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, and Bordetella. We take a conservative approach to vaccination frequency — for example, we recommend the Distemper/Parvovirus vaccine every three years for adult dogs, while many clinics still administer it annually (which is unnecessary in most cases).

We may also discontinue certain vaccines for senior pets when they are no longer beneficial. For puppies, we encourage a split vaccination protocol, meaning we divide the vaccines into separate visits to reduce the risk of vaccine reactions.

During your pet’s examination, we’ll review which flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives are best suited for your companion’s health and lifestyle.

We offer oral and topical medications, with and without tick coverage, to provide customized protection based on your pet’s environment and sensitivity.

Proudly serving pet owners in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Westminster, and surrounding Orange County communities.
