What Is a Pet Health Certificate?
Health certificates may be required for airline travel, interstate travel, and international travel.
Many destinations require that this documentation be completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian.
USDA-Accredited Veterinarian for Pet Travel
A USDA-accredited veterinarian has completed additional certification through the United States Department of Agriculture to perform official travel examinations and prepare required pet travel documentation.
This accreditation allows Dr. Lewis to:
- Perform official travel examinations
- Complete federally required paperwork
- Submit international travel documents for USDA endorsement when needed
- Ensure your pet meets destination-specific travel regulations
Domestic and International Pet Health Certificates
Domestic travel within the United States is generally more straightforward but may still require a physical examination, proof of vaccinations, and a health certificate issued within a certain timeframe.
International pet travel is often more complex and may require:
- USDA-endorsed health certificates
- Specific vaccinations
- Microchip identification
- Blood testing
- Parasite treatments
- Import permits
Important Things to Know About International Pet Travel
Timing is extremely important, as many international health certificates must be completed within 10 days of travel. We often recommend scheduling your pet’s travel examination approximately 9–10 days before departure to help ensure the certificate remains valid throughout the process.
Microchip requirements must also be handled carefully. Many countries require the microchip to be placed before the rabies vaccine is administered. If the rabies vaccine was given first, some countries may require the vaccine to be repeated.
Because every country has different requirements, we strongly recommend beginning the international travel process several weeks—or even months—in advance whenever possible.

This timing helped ensure the USDA office had enough time to process the health certificate and return the completed paperwork before the family’s departure date.
Common Documents Needed for Pet Travel
- Rabies vaccination certificates
- Vaccine records
- Microchip documentation
- Laboratory test results
- Import permits
- Completed health certificate paperwork
Why Timing Matters for Pet Travel Certificates
Because of this, scheduling your appointment at the correct time is extremely important. If completed too early, the certificate may expire before travel. If completed too late, there may not be enough time for processing or corrections if needed.
